Arizona Wildfire Consumes 10,000 Acres PDF Print E-mail
WILLIAMS, Ariz. (AP) - A lightning-caused wildfire that has been burning northeast of Williams since early August has now consumed nearly 10,000 acres. The fire in the Kaibab National Forest is not being actively fought, but is being managed much like a prescribed burn to clear out forest undergrowth and improve forest health. The fire is burning in mixed ponderosa pine, juniper and brush about 15 miles northeast of Williams. Forest Service officials said Friday that it could burn as many as 18,000 acres if not suppressed. Eight firefighters and a helicopter are assigned to keep the fire from burning outside established boundaries. The fire was ignited on Aug. 7 and grew to 700 acres before monsoon rains mostly extinguished the blaze. The fire began growing again on Oct. 15

10-28) 09:54 PDT DUARTE, CA (AP) -- Firefighters have surrounded a 35-acre wildfire in the dry bed of the San Gabriel River between Duarte and Azusa while a separate small fire forced the closure of westbound lanes of the Foothill 210 Freeway in northern Los Angeles. County fire spokesman Captain Mike Brown says about 120 firefighters and water-dropping helicopters took on the Duarte blaze that started about 2 a.m. Tuesday. It was contained by 7 a.m. Brown says winds up to 20 mph fanned the flames but firefighters kept the blaze inside the riverbed and it didn't go near homes. The tiny fire in the Sunland area 20 miles north of downtown broke out just after 6 a.m. and was quickly put out but westbound lanes of the Foothill Freeway were closed for as many as 4 hours at La Tuna Canyon Road while firefighters mopped up the blaze. One westbound lane was reopened after two hours, the other two lanes after four hours
